Mom's Health Alert

By Dana Sullivan
http://www.clubmom.com

You know when your child's next doctor's appointment is right down to the hour. But how diligent are you about keeping up with your own health checkups? If you have a Pap smear every year and leave it at that, you're not doing enough, says Dr. Vivian Dickerson, the division director of general obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center.

"A lot of diseases that begin to develop in your twenties and thirties, like cervical cancer and heart disease, are often silent at first," says Dickerson. "But if they're caught early through screening tests, they may be cured or corrected before more serious complications develop." [Full Article]

Pain Pills Reduce The Risk of Breast Cancer
A research study found that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or aspirin may significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer. This also helps women at high risk for cancer, according to an article in Family Circle (by Christie Brophy, October 15, 2003 The study concluded that women who took non-steroidal anti-inflammatories two or more times per week for a 5 to 9 year period showed a 21 percent reduced risk. Women who took non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for 10 years or more showed a 28 percent reduced risk. Paul Harris, M.D., Ph.D., study author, found that Ibuprofin was twice as effective as aspirin at decreasing the risk.  He also found that acetaminophen and baby aspirin (81mg) had no effect.  As always, see our doctor before starting any anti-inflammatory regimen.

About Acne

What is Acne

“All acne begins with one basic lesion: the comedo, an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Invisible to the naked eye, the comedo lurks beneath the surface of your skin waiting for the right conditions to grow into an inflamed lesion. As the skin continues to produce more oil, bacteria flourish within the swollen follicle. The surrounding skin becomes increasingly inflamed as your white blood cells fight against the intruders.” More Proactiv.com

“Millions of people have discovered Proactiv® Solution...from people like you to celebrities like Vanessa Williams, Judith Light, Stephanie Seymour and Elle Macpherson... they all say Proactiv Solution helped banish their breakouts and get them on the path to clear, beautiful, star-quality skin.” To find out more click here Proactiv® Solution

Low-Carb Foods - Just Deserts or Bad Gas?

If you're fighting the buldge around your waistline, like more than half the women in the country, you should probably consider eliminating high carbohydrates from your diet.  Do you like cookies, cakes and ice cream and can't seem to keep them on the store shelves instead of your cart?  There's an answer to your troubles - low carb foods.  Replace those heavy weight cookies for some low carb cookies, but don't overdue it.  An article in Ladies Home Journal (Novemer 2003 P166) asks Julie Walsh, American Dietetic Association spokesperson, about low carb foods and she recommended finding low carb substitutes for your favorite high carb junk foods, but don't overdue it and don't replace your healthy snacks and meals for low carb junk snacks.  A drawback to low carb foods, says Dr. Mary Ellen Camire, Ph.D., professor of food science and human nutrititon at the University of Maine, in Orono, is that manufacturers use soy, rye or almond flour instead of white flour, which can slow down the digestive process and if you eat too much of a low carb food, you may have some bloating and gastrointestinal discomfort.

A Summary - Eat All Foods In Moderation

10 Fun & Frugal Beauty Tips
by: Melissa Eaton

I'm ready to unload some the best secrets and tips that even your salon professionals use. Of course they would like for you to buy their products and will tell you they are the best in
order to make the sale, but I'm pretty sure they're not being honest in telling you what products are really on the backbar in their salons.

As a frugal person myself, I've always shared my secrets with my clients. I earn my living selling my services, not products. Here a few for you to enjoy!

1. To dry nail polish in a hurry, spray nails with PAM Oil Spray.

2. Olive oil can be added to bath water for a skin softener.

3. Toner/Astringent -- Use witch hazel instead. No need to dilute -- use full strength. You can also rinse with a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar after cleansing -- it balances out the ph of your skin.

4. Cut back on the amount of shampoo you use. Do the same with toothpaste. The manufacturers want us to use more, so we buy more.

5. Keep your pantyhose in the freezer, and they will last longer.

6. For great lotion, mix one-part lotion with one-part vaseline. It works better than plain lotion, and, depending on the cost of your lotion, you can stretch its value.

7. To prevent hair pins from falling out, bend one prong in a "V" about halfway up and insert in hair. It will stay.

8. Old lipstick tubes, thoroughly cleaned, are great for purse-sized pill boxes or for pins.

9. Use hydrogen peroxide as an inexpensive nail bleach.

10. For an excellent facial, mix dry oatmeal and water into a paste and spread on face. Lie down and let it dry. Wash off with warm water.
